Choosing an Auckland Tiler: 7 Questions to Ask

Choosing a tiler involves more than comparing a price per square metre. Preparation, waterproofing details and a clear scope of work affect both the finish and the final cost. Use these questions when planning a bathroom, kitchen, new floor or outdoor tiling project in Auckland.

1. Have you completed this type of tiling before?

Ask to see photographs of work relevant to your project. Large format porcelain, natural stone, mosaics, pool finishes and elevated tile decks each involve different details. Discuss the tile size, pattern, edge finish, niches and transitions you want, rather than relying on a general description of the room.

2. What preparation is included?

Find out who removes existing finishes, checks the substrate, deals with uneven surfaces and prepares the floor or walls. A quote should explain the preparation allowed for and what happens if demolition reveals damage or unsuitable framing. Ask how the tiler will check levels, falls, thresholds and movement joints before tiles are laid.

3. How will the waterproofing be specified and documented?

For wet areas, discuss the complete assembly: substrate, membrane or board system, junctions, penetrations and drainage. Ask which manufacturer's installation requirements will apply, who undertakes each part of the work and what records will be supplied at handover. Consent, inspection and producer-statement requirements should be checked for your particular scope before work starts.

4. Are the tiles and grout suitable for the space?

Bring the supplier's product information and a sample where possible. Discuss the tile's intended use, maintenance requirements, finish and size. Exterior surfaces, wet floors and pool interiors need careful product selection. Natural stone may need a different cleaning and sealing routine from porcelain. Ask whether an epoxy grout is appropriate for the application and included in the price.

5. What exactly does the quote include?

Compare the same scope across quotes. Look for separate allowances for preparation, waterproofing, tiling, grout, silicone, trims, mitres, niches, steps, waste removal and access. Clarify whether tiles and other products are supplied, whether GST is included, and how variations will be agreed. Plumbing, electrical work and fixtures may sit outside a tiling-only quote.

6. What is the realistic programme?

A retile and a complete bathroom renovation are different projects. Ask when products must be ordered, when the room will be unavailable and how preparation, waterproofing, inspections, curing and other trades fit together. Request a programme for your actual scope and an explanation of what could change it.

7. What happens at handover and if an issue arises?
